Who doesn’t love using a loofah!? These amazing sponges not only help us get squeaky clean, but they also exfoliate our skin! So what’s the problem, right? By nature, loofahs have numerous nooks and crannies. While these nooks and crannies are great for exfoliating and cleaning our skin, they are also a trap for the dead skin cells that we scrubbed off. The dead skin left in the loofah leaves an ideal environment for bacteria to grow, especially in a humid environment such as a bathroom. Anytime you use your loofah in the shower and it does not properly dry, bacteria is GROWING! Totally grossed out yet, ya me too! SO WHAT CAN WE DO!?
First, dry your loofah after you shower. After you finish your shower or your bath, thoroughly rinse your loofah, shake out the access water and hang it in a “cool” place to dry (aka not the shower). You can even microwave your loofah occasionally, but for a small portion of time (i.e 20 seconds).
Second, clean your loofah at least once a week. Your body wash won’t do the job ladies, you need to soak your loofah in a diluted bleach solution for about five minutes. Afterward, thoroughly rinse your loofah in water and allow it to air dry, again in a “cool” area.
Lastly, replace your loofah REGULARLY! If you use a plastic loofah, you should replace it every month or two. If you use a natural loofah, you will need to replace it more often.
Totally grossed out!? I apologize, but when I realized how gross our loofahs can get I needed to get the word out to you! If you want to avoid the drama of bacteria in your loofah, you can ditch your loofah completely and switch to a wash cloth or nothing at all.
